The city of Bhanbhore dates from the 1st century BC to the 13th century AD Archaeological records reveal remnants of three distinct periods on the site: Scytho Parthian 1st century BC to 2nd century AD Buddhist 2nd century AD to 8th century AD and early Islamic 8th century AD to 13th century AD The city was gradually deserted after the 13th century due to change in the course of the Indus.
Some archaeologist and historians suggest that Bhanbhore is the historical city of Debal, which the Arab general Muhammad bin Qasim conquered in 711–712 after defeating Raja Dahir, the last Hindu ruler of Sindh.
However this identification has not yet been confirmed.
though numerous research and excavation works have been carried out to link the two cities
Preliminary excavations in the area were first done by Ramesh Chandra Majumdar in 1928 and later by Leslie Alcock in 1951.
Pakistani archaeologist Dr F. A. Khan conducted extensive studies and excavations in the site from 1958 to 1965.
In March 2012 the Culture Department of Government of Sindh organized the first International Conference on Bhanbhore, where different experts and archaeologists presented their research on the site.
Ruins of historical city of Bhambhore is only 4 km from National highway N5 65 km (40 mi) east of Karachi. Bhambhore is an ancient city dating to the 1st century BC located in Sindh,Pakistan.
Three different periods in Sindh history coincide here: the Parthians, the Hindu-Buddhist and the early Islamic, after which it was abandoned when the Indus river shifted its position and the creek was silted.
Archaeological findings show that the city consisted of an enclosed area surrounded by a stone and mud wall. The city was divided into eastern and western parts divided by a stone wall in the center. The eastern part contains ruins of a mosque which was built in 727 AD. It is the oldest mosques in the sub-continent. The remains of the mosque were discovered in 1960. Remains of houses, streets, and other buildings have been found both within and outside the citadel.
The city was very famous at that time for the trade but later on the city was abandon due to change in the Indus river course due to the earthquake in 8th century. The city was conquered by Muhammad Bin Qasim in 7th century and that time the Bhambhore was populated by Hindu Buddhist. It was known as the hub of trade and mostly the trade between south Asia and Arabs. The other civilizations that time was were also following them. According an archaeologist, the Bhambhore is spread in 14 acres having three gates. There is museum in the Bhambhore where the things founded in Bhambhore are stored to keep them secure, at that time the different glassware, coins, glass lamps, perfumery bottles are stored and that were mad by the civilizations of Bhambhore. The love story of Sassi and Punhu is also very famous in Pakistan. Sassi was the daughter of a Raja at that time and in their family the daughter was not expected to born because their royalty was being destroyed so the Raja ordered to kill her but her mother locked her in a wooden box and thrown in the Indus river. A poor person found that box and he had no child so he thought to adopt that baby girl he thought that baby is blessing from God for him. As the sassi grew up she became extremely beautiful and as the Bhambhore was the hub of trade that’s why the many caravans daily pass there and the stories regarding sassi’s beauty spread there and a Prince Punhu came to know about his beauty. The prince went as her house and met her face to face and they felt in love at the first time but the father of sassi refused because the Prince was not from their castle.
Somehow sassi’s father give his permission for the marriage but the father of Prince was very angry from this disrespectable relation because Punhu was a prince and saasi was a poor lady. And he sent his other son at Bhambhore. Punhu’s brother threatened Punhu but he didn’t take them serious because his love for sassi was beyond that. So his brother planned a trick and in the celebration of the first night of marriage they mad Punhu heavy drunk and put him on the camel and brought back at their home land Makran. At the morning when sassi realized that Punhu cheated her she became mad and started barefoot twards Makran. She became thirsty and near a hunt asked for water from a man the man has dirty thought in his mind when he saw the beauty of sassi and tried to force him on sassi then sassi ran away and asked God to save her suddenly earth opened and she buried in earth. After that when the Prince Punhu got his senses back he came back Bhambhore and asked for her Sassi people told him the whole story and he felt on earth and asked God to give back her loved lady and at the same place earth reopened and Punhu also buried there. There grave still exists in the valley one must see that legendary grave.
